You bet he does, but unfortunately, this chapter is not in a novel, the last ride of the growing effort of the federal government to control every inch of our lives.
Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" is many things to many people, but it is mostly just a warning how things can get when people allow the government to micro-manage the economy on behalf of the social justice.
We get, for example, close-up in real life in South Carolina, where Boeing has spent millions of dollars to start production of the 787 Dreamliner to be stopped in its tracks by the National Labor Relations Board - an entity from the remains of the New Deal which has now reared its ugly head to bite Boeing during the worst economy since the Great Depression.
Markets are shrugging off economic data Thursday morning, after jobless claims, retail sales and inflation data on the producer side showed slight improvements in all counts.
The Labor Department said that jobless claims fell 22,000 last week to 405,000 from an upwardly revised 427,000 the week before. The claims represent their lowest level in three months. Last week, the government’s monthly employment situation survey showed that only 18,000 jobs were added to the economy in June, far below any economists’ expectations. National unemployment inched up to 9.2%, defying data that seemed to point to signs of an improving economy. The Labor Department’s numbers showed that employers are still facing difficulties that are preventing them from taking on new employees. This is combined with a mass wave of cut-backs in the public sector.
